State law
Paternity law in North Carolina.
North Carolina paternity law is governed by Chapter 49 of the General Statutes. Paternity may be established through marriage, voluntary affidavit of parentage filed with the North Carolina Vital Records office, or court action. Court-ordered genetic testing under §8-50.1 is admissible in all North Carolina district courts when performed by an AABB-accredited laboratory. The North Carolina Child Support Services Division administers testing for state-administered cases. North Carolina permits the establishment of paternity at any time before the child reaches 18.
