State law
Paternity law in California.
California operates under the Uniform Parentage Act (California Family Code §7600 et seq.). A child born to married parents is presumed to be the biological child of the marriage. Voluntary Declarations of Paternity may be signed at the hospital and filed with the California Department of Child Support Services. Genetic testing may be requested in any paternity action under §7551, and AABB-accredited results are admissible in all California family courts. California permits paternity actions to be brought any time before the child reaches 18, with set-aside relief from a Voluntary Declaration available within two years under specified conditions.
